Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long is the hike and how difficult is it?
The main trail is 8 km (about 3–4 hours). Difficulty is moderate, with ups and downs, rustic bridges, and natural terrain. Suitable for active travelers and families with basic fitness.

2. Do I need a guide?
No — the trail is self-guided with clear maps and signage. 👉 If you want to learn more about the flora, fauna, and history of the cloud forest, you can book a naturalist guide (optional).

3. Is it crowded?
El Tigre Waterfalls is usually less crowded than the main Monteverde reserves, offering more privacy and tranquility. During peak holiday seasons (Christmas, Easter, mid-year), visitation increases but remains far less saturated.

4. What should I wear?

  • Closed-toe hiking shoes are recommended (tennis shoes are acceptable).

  • Comfortable clothes for walking.

  • Rain jacket or poncho (weather in the cloud forest can change quickly).

  • Extra clothes if you plan to swim in the river pools.

5. What should I bring?

  • Water bottle

  • Sunscreen & insect repellent

  • Hat & hiking poles (optional but helpful)

  • Camera or phone + dry bag for protection

  • Small snacks (or enjoy lunch at our restaurant after your hike!)

6. Do I need a 4x4 to get there?
Not required. Any car can reach our reception via the Monte de los Olivos road (~20 minutes from Santa Elena). However, a 4x4 is recommended in rainy season for comfort.

7. Is there food on-site?
Yes! Our Panoramic View Restaurant offers typical Costa Rican dishes, vegetarian & vegan options, fresh coffee, and homemade desserts — all with breathtaking views of the canyon.

8. Can I buy souvenirs?
Yes, we have a small souvenir shop at the reception with local crafts, gifts, and El Tigre merchandise. Perfect to take a memory home.

9. What is not allowed?

  • Pets (for safety and wildlife protection)

  • Smoking or drinking alcohol on the trails

  • Removing plants, flowers, or animals from the forest

  • Running horses (for the safety of riders and animals)

10. Can I swim in the waterfalls?
Swimming is allowed in the river pools — not directly under the waterfalls (for safety reasons). Please follow staff instructions.

11. Road Access to El Tigre Waterfalls

Is El Tigre Waterfalls open during the upcoming road works in Monteverde?

Yes! 🌿 While there will be maintenance works on a bridge along the main road to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in the coming weeks, the access road to El Tigre Waterfalls remains open.

Visitors driving their own vehicles can reach our reception without any problem. We encourage you to take advantage of this time to discover our trails, waterfalls, and activities — a perfect alternative to enjoy nature while works are taking place elsewhere in the area.
