El Tigre History: From Legend to Adventure 🌿🐆

In the mid-1980s, the Rodríguez family — who lived and farmed these very lands — faced a challenge that marked their destiny. A powerful jaguar, once called “tigre” by locals, prowled the forests and preyed on their cattle and horses. Despite days of pursuit, the animal’s presence became a legend in the community.

This story gave birth to the name El Tigre Waterfalls — not as a tale of fear, but as a reminder of the strength and mystery of the cloud forest of Monteverde.

From Farmland to Cloud Forest Conservation 🌱

Over the years, the family transformed their farm into a sanctuary where nature thrives. Today, more than 80% of the property is dedicated to reforestation and conservation.

Our trails allow you to discover the same cloud forest ecosystem found in Monteverde’s most famous reserves — with orchids, giant ferns, monkeys, and countless bird species — but here you’ll also encounter towering waterfalls, rustic bridges, and sweeping canyon views. It’s the same forest, with more landscapes and adventure.

Protecting Big Cats, Supporting Farmers 🐾

Out of the original story was born a community initiative: “El Grito del Puma y del Ganadero”. Its mission is to protect wild cats like jaguars and pumas while helping farmers coexist sustainably. With the support of Panthera CR and SINAC, new techniques now allow families to protect their livestock without harming wildlife.

We share this project not to seek pity, but to celebrate a vision: a Monteverde where people and nature thrive together. Visitors to El Tigre are not just hikers — they are part of this legacy.

Your Turn to Be Part of the Story 🌊🌳

When you hike the 8 km trail of El Tigre Waterfalls, crossing nine bridges and admiring four spectacular waterfalls, you’re walking through the same forests where these stories began.

It’s more than just a hike — it’s a journey through nature, history, and conservation, woven together into one unforgettable adventure.
